Crikey! Steve Irwin receives new Hollywood honour

We don’t know about you, but we still remember what we were doing when we got the news of Steve Irwin’s passing.

It was one of those moments in Australian history that deeply affected many of us, as can be expected with the death of an Aussie icon.

12 years on and Irwin is now being awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles for his huge contribution to the entertainment industry through his wildlife documentaries.

What started as a humble wildlife park became world famous through Steve and Terri’s documentaries that gained much international attention and became iconic to Australian culture.

They put Australia Zoo and Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on the map, by building one of the most well known tourist attractions in Australia.

Being awarded a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is not an easy feat.

Australia Zoo and the Irwin family could not have achieved this honour for Steve without the support of major sponsor, Visit Sunshine Coast and Russell Crowe.

Yes, you heard right, Russell Crowe.

According to Pedestrian.tv, Terri Irwin said Crowe wrote a letter to Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who decide which stars will appear on the famous walk.

“Steve’s Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is an incredible honour for our family,” Terri Irwin said in a statement.

“Steve would have been so chuffed.”

“He was always such a proud Australian and dearly loved living on the Sunshine Coast.”

“We will celebrate Steve’s legacy and continue to protect wildlife and wild places.”

“And we will always call Queensland’s Sunshine Coast home.”
