Airlines serve up alternatives for travellers headed to Bali
The chaos caused by Bali’s Mount Agung continues to disrupt travel, with more than 150,000 people evacuated from their homes near the volcano, and the island’s main airport due to close for another 24 hours as a result of ashfall.
Airlines continue to monitor the situation and provide updates to travellers – see Virgin and Qantas updates – with both saying flights to Denpasar have been cancelled for today, Tuesday 28 November (see full list below).
The Agung Volcano Observatory’s aviation colour code is currently red, indicating that further eruption is imminent or underway with significant emission of volcanic ash into the atmosphere likely.
Qantas added, “Options are available to Qantas customers holding a valid ticket issued on/before 25 November 2017 who are affected by Mount Agung volcano for travel between Australia and Denpasar on/after 25 November 2017 and on/before 4 December 2017.”
And now Virgin Australia has announced that it is offering guests booked to travel to Denpasar (Bali) up until 4 December 2017, the option of switching to alternative holiday destinations as a result of the ongoing volcanic eruptions at Mount Agung.
Guests that were travelling to Bali have the option change their travel itinerary within 30 days of their original travel date, with options including:
- Rebooking their flights to Bali to a later date;
- Changing their flight booking to Nadi (Fiji) or Port Vila (Vanuatu), with no fare difference to be applied to the customer. Please note all changes are subject to availability and must be to the same fare type; or
- Changing their flight booking to another destination within Virgin Australia’s domestic or international network, with fare differences to be paid by the guest.
Virgin Australia will honour the value of original Denpasar airfares paid by guests for these new destinations and will also waive any change or cancellation fees.
If the value of the new airfare is less than the amount paid for the Denpasar airfare, the balance can be applied towards accommodation at any new destination via a booking with Virgin Australia Holidays (subject to availability), or kept in the guest’s travel bank for use towards flights at another time.
For guests who choose to cancel their flight within this time period, they will receive a Travel Credit or will be able to switch holiday destinations for travel within 30 days of their original travel date, as well as purchase accommodation through Virgin Australia Holidays.
