American Airlines co-pilot dies mid-flight

In sad news today, the co-pilot of an American Airlines flight passed away just prior to landing.

The captain of the plane landed safely, per Fairfax, at Albuquerque International Sunport New Mexico, and paramedics were waiting to try and revive him.

Flight 1353 was less than 10 minutes from landing when the captain declared an emergency, citing a “medical issue” on board the plane shortly after 3.30pm Wednesday local US time.

The aircraft taxied to the gate where it was met by paramedics who performed CPR for 35 to 40 minutes before the pilot was pronounced dead, per CNN.

First officer William ‘Mike’ Grubbs was 58, with an airline spokesperson refraining from providing details on the cause of death.

Per Fairfax, American Airlines chief executive Doug Parker said in a letter to airline workers this morning, “Despite heroic efforts to revive him, Mike passed away.

“We are deeply saddened over the loss of one of our American Airlines family.”
