7 Tips to Tackle Hong Kong for Rugby Sevens

Rugby Sevens will transform Hong Kong into a City of Excitement this April.

From the 7th to the 9th April, Hong Kong will be booming with festivals, fan walks, concerts and celebrations in bars and restaurants, to kick off the annual Hong Kong Rugby Sevens event.

While costumes and cocktails take priority, there’s much to see and do beyond the stadium walls. Here’s our tips on how to dive head first into Hong Kong.

Eat

You won’t need to travel far to get a good meal in Hong Kong. Hong Kong’s Central and Soho areas are brimming with mouth-watering dim sum h ouses, local eateries and noodle outlets.

Not too far from here is Sheung Wan – elegant, exotic and hip, the area has seen a recent resurgence and is now a melting pot of cool bars, restaurants, cafes and galleries. Top restaurants include Little Bao, Yardbird, Ronin, Man Mo Cafe, Mrs Pound and Aberdeen Street Social.

If you’re looking for a true local hang, then head just beyond Sheung Wan and visit its funky neighbour, Sai Ying Pun.

Here you will find a fun ex-pat neighbourhood with a collection of delicious restaurants and bars including The Winery, El Loco, Winston’s (great coffee and run by Aussies!), Kwan Kee Claypot Rice, Potato Head and Kaum for Balinese.

Drink

Look no further than Central, Soho and Leung Kwai Fung for rooftop bars, speakeasy’s and creative cocktails. Try J.Boroski, Iron Fairies, Foxglove, Sevva, Stazione Novella, Quinary, The Pontiac, Honi Honi Tiki Bar and Stockton.

Not just for the small kids, Hong Kong Disneyland has all the bells and whistles to really let your hair down in Hong Kong, including a new marvel themed ride, exclusive to Hong Kong Disneyland.

Step into the technological wonderland of Stark Industries, fly through the streets of Hong Kong in an Iron Wing Flight vehicle, meet Iron Man in person, and don an Iron Man suit of armour.

Explore

There is so much to see and do in Central Hong Kong. An easy stroll will have you discover local wet markets, local designer boutiques, contemporary art galleries, ancient antiques and temples.

However, if you have a day to spare why not head to the south side of Hong Kong island. Kick off your day in Wong Chuk Hang, now an easy train (MTR) journey from Admiralty, and grab a coffee and breakfast from one of the local cafes – Sensory Zero or 3/3rds are great options!

Once you’re fully charged, walk around the area and discover local art galleries and designer home wares. Be sure to know where you’re going though – a lot of places are hidden!

Repulse Bay Hong Kong Island

For lunch, catch the local bus to Repulse Bay and dine at one of the many restaurants along the beachfront. Try Limewood for South American flavours and exceptional margaritas or TRi for authentic Balinese.

After lunch, get back on the bus and head to Stanley for a stroll along the waterfront and market stalls.

Shop

For a true taste of Hong Kong, venture over to the Kowloon side and up to the neon-bathed historic streets of Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po for markets galore.

The neighbourhood includes one of Hong Kong’s most popular markets, the Ladies’ Market, and also has a ton of shopping streets, which are a common feature in southern China.

Conveniently, these are where a cluster of merchants sell one type of product on a single street. Mong Kok has entire streets and street sections dedicated to the sale of goldfish, flowers, sneakers, and kitchenware.
