“Agile” Qantas bumps up Asia routes

“Agile” Qantas bumps up Asia routes

Growing demand for its Sydney to Hong Kong and Perth to Singapore services has prompted Qantas to add more flights on both routes from December.

Qantas International chief executive Gareth Evans said Qantas was taking the opportunity to respond to significant demand on routes that are performing well with “increased aircraft utilisation”.

“We’re seeing Australian companies continue to expand their business in Asia, while the lower dollar is making Australia an even more attractive place to visit,” he said.

“It’s about being agile to adjust to changes in the market where it’s needed – and we’re able to do that by maximising the utilisation of our large, varied fleet. Because this growth is coming from increased fleet utilisation, it is a very cost efficient way to meet that rising demand.”

Evans underlined Asia as a “strategic priority” for the airline.

“We’re going to continue to support Australia’s growth in the region by maximising our fleet, deepening our partnerships, and offering what we believe is the best premium service in the market.”

From December 1, the airline will add a Tuesday and Thursday service between Perth and Singapore on a year round basis, using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft.  This takes it from five services per week to daily.

It will also operate a second Friday service on the Sydney-Hong Kong route from December 11 to March 23, taking it from 11 to 12 weekly services, with double daily services operating from Monday to Friday.

A combination of refurbished Boeing 747 and Airbus 330 aircraft will operate this route, with an A380 being deployed on selected services during Christmas and the Lunar New Year.
