The top 20 hippest cities in the world
Because the travel industry didn’t have enough nicknames for the various travel generations, now we have Yuccies.
Yuccies are the “young urban creatives” taking the world, and travel industry, by storm, and according to Skyscanner, are worth keeping in mind when it comes to selling to clients.
As a result the travel search engine has come up with a guide to the top 20 cities for Yuccies to adventure in, with details on why these cities are worth a visit.
To bring these cities to life, the sequel to Skyscanner’s #24hPeriscope live streaming world tour will be held on Friday 24 July 2015 via broadcasting app Periscope and will enable travellers to explore these alternative urban areas and discover why these locations are so popular with this particular group.
“We wanted to know more about the Young Urban Creative and understand their interests, the places they go to and why,” Skyscanner’s head of marketing Oceania Alana Saphin-Polchleb said.
The Skyscanner Yuccie City Guide includes up-and-coming neighbourhoods in cities like Leipzig, Milan, Islington and Sydney’s very own Alexandria.
Here’s the list of 20 Yuccie faves around the world:
1. Plagwitz \ Leipzig – think Hipster mecca, with innovative start-ups and designers, galleries and quirky cultural spaces in post-industrial rubble.
2. Savamala \ Belgrade – workshop space and creative hubs are springing up all over the area, above ground and below in the city’s tunnel system.
3. Vesterbro \ Copenhagen – an ultra cool blend of cycling, soy lattes, antique bookshops and local art galleries.
4. Eilandje \ Antwerp – this is the palce for cutting edge cuisine and contemporary art exhibitions, with a healthy dose of vintage furniture and jazz music.
5. Hornstull \ Stockholm – a real buzz of creative activity, with unique business by day, clubs by night, and flea markets by weekend.
6. Witte De Withstraat \ Rotterdam – the best spot for picking up some quirky crafts, designer clothes and wandering through contemporary art galleries and museums.
7. Nevsky Prospect \ Saint Petersburg – slip down the side streets and alleyways to find workshops and creative spaces where the younger generation flex their mighty talents.
8. Islington \ London – Islington retains some of its rough and ready character, but get in quick before the Yuccies turn your local boozer in to an ‘eat clean’ juice bar.
9. Soma \ San Francisco – After a hard day in their co-working office space, the San Fran Yuccie can usually be found running along the shores of the Bay Area, looking intellectual in the city’s galleries and museums, or Instagramming their organic meals.
10. Sternschanze \ Hamburg – Independent galleries, boutiques, Turkish restaurants, cafés with bags of charm and furniture design shops: this is where urban style blends perfectly with bohemian chic.
11. Zona Tortona \ Milan – cool design, performance and art, with dinner in an old industrial warehouse – need we say more?
12. Woodstock \ Cape Town – a favourite spot for young artists, exhibiting in independent galleries, bringing to life to their dreams and turning them into small businesses.
13. Greenpoint \ New York – weekly yoga classes, single-speed vintage bikes, smartphones and lifestyle blogs, the hipsters are here to stay.
14. Vila Madalena \ São Paulo – stop by some of the small boutiques and craft shops, run by local designers, take a break for some organic food then party all night long.
15. Cihangir \ Istanbul – these bohemian souls live and devote themselves to a thoroughly modern lifestyle, opening designer boutiques, craft shops and elegant clubs.
16. La Confluence \ Lyon – a terrific breeding ground for new galleries, workshops, cultural centres, all aiming to nurture fresh young talent, including La Sucrière, once a huge Art Deco-styled sugar factory, and now a large arts centre spread over four floors.
17. Sant Antoni \ Barcelona – Young urbanites have taken control and are opening up creative spaces, local bars, tapas joints and cool businesses in this neighbourhood.
18. Alexandria \ Sydney – While Newtown is traditionally the suburb of choice for pretty young things, another area of Sydney that’s been catapulted on to the main stage by an influx of Yuccies is Alexandria, and in particular, hotspot known as The Grounds.
19. Nakameguro \ Tokyo – girls and boys stream by on vintage bicycles, use the local coffee shop as their office and buy vintage looks in the many second-hand shops which stay open until late evening here.
20. Design District (D3) \ Dubai – the design district, also known as ‘d3’, is home to the usual smattering of cool galleries, workshops, boutiques and cafés here, but we recommend you pop into Ghaf Kitchen, for tasty street food.
