Tourism funding race heats up in QLD

The sunshine state is expecting a boost in tourism after three projects were given the green light to receive over $360,000 in funding.

The latest funding stems from a partnership between the federal and state governments and will be followed by funding of $7.5 million over the next three years.

Total investment for Queensland’s tourism industry will topple $15.5 million over the next four years.

The projects highlighted to receive additional funding this financial year include expansion of Wi-Fi infrastructure to develop free hotspots across the state, “Embracing 2018” which is expected to improve service culture and promote new standards of quality in the Gold Coast tourism and hospitality industry ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and “Industry Capability”, which will provide opportunities for SME tourism operators to develop skills to target digital channels and learn to maximise yields.

Federal Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Robb, said Queensland’s increasing popularity among Asian travellers “means it’s more important than ever to support the development of the industry” in order to capitalise on further growth potential.

“The number of Chinese setting-off on an international holiday is expected to reach 200 million by 2020; Queensland is perfectly placed to capture its share of this growth, given it has some of the best natural assets in the world,” Robb said.
