The good and not so great changes for IHG loyalty members

InterContinental Hotels Group will add a new top tier membership level to its loyalty scheme, and changes its existing Gold and Platinum IHG Rewards Club model making it easier to attain.

The yet-to-be-named top tier will be launched in July, according to Business Traveller, and members will need to earn 75,000 points or stay at IHG hotels for 75 qualifying nights in a year to achieve the new status.

As per the report, the new top tier members will receive 100% extra bonus points for qualifying stays and will be able to choose between receiving 25,000 points or upgrading a friend or family member to Platinum status.

The move comes after IHG also announced changes for current IHG Rewards Club Gold and Platinum members, including a qualifying restructure to earn higher status, dropping the number of points required to reach elite membership.

Members will now need to earn 10,000 points (down from 20,000) or stay at IHG hotels for 10 nights a year to earn Gold, while 40,000 points (down from 60,000) or 40 nights staying at IHG hotels are required for Platinum status.

Perhaps the biggest change for existing members is news that from May 2016, all IHG Rewards Club points will expire for any members who has not earned or redeemed any points in the previous 12 months. Members points earned previously had no expiry date.
