China moves to curb travel to Hong Kong

Chinese authorities are bringing in curbs on travel to Hong Kong to cool tensions over the growing influx of mainland shoppers that’s angering residents of the former British colony.

The official Xinhua news agency reported on Monday that the security bureau in neighbouring Shenzhen would stop issuing multiple visit passes.

Instead they will be able to apply only for once-a-week travel passes.

The move comes as anger simmers over the rising numbers of cross-border mainland Chinese travellers, who’ve been blamed for voracious buying of everything from baby formula to luxury goods that distorts the local economy.

Hong Kong activists held several chaotic protests earlier this year against the Chinese shoppers.

The South China Morning Post newspaper reported that the new policy could slash mainland Chinese visitor numbers by 4.6 million people a year.
