“Pass on fuel savings”: Australia’s tourism ministers urge

Tourism ministers are calling for all airlines to pass on fuel savings to customers in a bid to boost the wider-industry.

The motion comes after Australia’s tourism ministers met with industry leaders and the New Zealand government last week to discuss the progress of Australia’s 2020 tourism strategy.

While noting “one or two” airlines were reacting positively toward lower oil prices, the ministers considered “more needs to be done” with encouraging all to pass on reductions in full to customers.

New Zealand’s associate minister for tourism, Paula Bennett as well as other industry bodies in attendance, including the TTF, also called for further liberalisation and deregulation to boost interconnectedness between the two governments including leveraging tourism spend with expanded industry partnerships and a continuance to developing skills within the tourism hospitality industry.

In a bid to double Australia’s overnight expenditure to between $115 billion to $140 billion by 2020, the government expects to capitalise on tourism and hospitality as one of the world’s fastest growing industries and Australia’s largest service export industry, which is expected to double in size over the next two decades.

Recent successes for the government include passing new air services agreements to triple aviation capacity between Australia and China, as well as a move to extend online lodgement visitor visas to all nationalities by the end of the year, including a pilot version recently launched for Chinese and Indian tourists.
