Top 10 places for Aussie ice-cream
Summer is here, the sun is out, and that means it’s time for some tasty iced treats.
TripAdvisor has announced the top ten ice-cream parlours in Australia, as ranked by the Popularity Index, which looks at the quality, quantity and currency of reviews from the TripAdvisor community.
The sunny state of Queensland is, unsurprisingly, a hot contender, taking out the top two spots on the list, with Devine Gelato and Gelocchio, both based in Cairns.
So tastebuds rejoice, here are your top ten Aussie ice-cream spots.
10. Boardwalk Ice Creamery & Crepe
Merimbula, New South Wales is a popular holiday spot, but with five out of five ‘bubbles’ on TripAdvisor, it’s also known for its delicious ice-cream, pancakes and Japanese crepes.
One reviewer says, “We LOVE having dessert here when in Merimbula,” and that they can’t go wrong with any choice.
9. Cow and Moon Artisan Gelato
When in Enmore, Sydney, Cow and Moon is the award-winning gelato parlour you simply can’t bypass.
Priding themselves on their authentic Italian flavours, reviewers say everything from the coffee, ambience, service and gelato make it an ideal ice-cream experience.
8. RivaReno Gelato Darlinghurst
Sydney has a few top spots, and this Italian gelato is one of them.
Around 70 reviews scored it 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor, with the store first opened in 2005 in Milan before migrating to Sydney in 2013.
One TripAdvisor reviewer praised, “You can taste each flavour in the gelato. It is so smooth and creamy, and really reminds me of some of the fantastic gelato I had in Italy.”
Coolangatta, Queensland boasts hand crafted gelato on Kirra Beach, with reviewers calling it “the real deal.”
6. Dooleys Ice Cream – The Ice Cream Tub
Found in Apollo Bay in Victoria, Dooleyes is known for sharing its quirky ice-cream flavours with travellers on the Great Ocean Road.
Unique flavours such as vegemite getting gold stars from reviewers, who say its “worth the wait” and “did not disappoint.”
Founded in 2002 in Melbourne, this Lygon Street winner is internationally acclaimed for its fresh, colourful range of artisan gelato.
One TripAdvisor reviewer commented, “This is the place you go to for experiencing unusual gelato flavours.”
Of all the places, Bundaberg, Queensland is pumping out some of Australia’s favourite ice-cream.
Multi-award winning and beautifully presented, this gelato gem is renowned for its creative and surprising flavours, from chai to Kinder Surprise.
Unsurprisingly, this Sydney and Melbourne favourite has over 700 reviews that give it a 4.5/5 for its textured flavoured ice-creams all made in-house.
According to one TripAdvisor reviewer, it boasts the “best gelato outside of Rome and Florence,” with flavours as diverse as Italian nougat and salted coconut and mango salsa.
2. Gelocchio
Cairns takes out the top two places, with Gelocchio famous for its 100% natural, handmade gelato that specialise in fruit flavours from Rusty’s Markets down the road.
Reviewers comment that it’s “just like Italy” and “very authentic.”
Family owned and operated, Devine Gelato serves up premium gelato and sorbets using top notch ingredients and featuring enormous variety.
An impressed reviewer commented, “I have had a lot of gelato and ice cream in the USA, Australia, and New Zealand, and I never have had better than Devine's Gelato.”
