Aussies staying close to home for winter holidays
By admin

Australians are holidaying close to home this winter, with Melbourne the top city for domestic getaways.

According to data released by HotelsCombined.com, the Victorian capital tops the list of popular winter destinations, followed closely by Sydney and the Gold Coast.

The HotelsCombined data looks at where Aussies are booking accommodation for school holiday trips over winter, and suggests that travellers are choosing more affordable destinations that are closer to home.

Aussie cities Melbourne, Sydney, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Perth have claimed five of the ten places on the list, while London is the most popular overseas destination, with Singapore and New York City hot on its heels.

Of the Australian cities in the top ten winter destinations, accommodation on the Gold Coast appears the cheapest, with those booking hotels spending an average of $174 per night, compared to $190 and $204 per night in Melbourne and Sydney, respectively.

Of the overseas holiday spots named, travellers are spending the least on accommodation in Rome, at an average nightly rate of $176 over the winter holiday period.

Other overseas destinations, however, have much higher prices than Australian cities, with London at $235 per night and Singapore at $246 per night.

“Australians are sticking close to home this winter and are realising that a holiday within the country can be just as relaxing as going overseas,” HotelsCombined global PR and content manager Alycia Simons said, acknowledging that Aussies are saving more by staying local.

“We understand that accommodation is important and can make or break a holiday,” she said.
