Travel company urges Danes to conceive on holiday

A Danish travel company is offering a three-year supply of nappies and a family holiday to anyone who gets pregnant during one of its holidays.

It's even throwing in a free pregnancy test and ovulation calender.

The company, Spies – the Danish arm of Thomas Cook – says it's taking Denmark's dwindling birth rate into its own hands in its "Do it for Denmark" campaign.

Spies is offering an "ovulation discount" to women who enter the start-date of their latest menstruation period into their booking system.

This allows the company to calculate the best time for ovulating females to travel.

Those who later submit pictures of a positive pregnancy test and a pregnancy journal after their holiday go in the running to win a three-year supply of nappies and a family holiday.

Elderly people and gay couples were also invited to participate.

"It's not just about winning, all the fun is in the participation," the ad says.

In a two-minute video clip on its website featuring abandoned playgrounds and sombre-looking pensioners, Spies laments that the country's birth rate is at a 27-year low.

"At Spies we're concerned. Fewer Danes mean fewer to support the ageing population – and tragically, fewer holidaying with us," the travel company says.

In the clip, a grey and depressing Scandinavia is contrasted with the City of Light, where a young Danish couple can be seen drinking in front of the Eiffel Tower, dancing in front of the Moulin Rouge and shopping for sexy underwear.

"Meet Emma. She is Danish, but even though she was born and raised in Denmark, she was made in Paris. Right up there, in that hotel room," says the advert's voiceover.

The commercial goes on to say Danes have 46 per cent more sex while on holiday, resulting in 10 per cent of the population being conceived.

"We are prescribing a romantic city holiday to save Denmark's future," it says.

"After all, it will also help our future business."

In 2012 Denmark's birth rate was down 17 per cent since the turn of the millennium to 10.4 births per 1000 residents.

This made it the lowest in the Nordic region, according to official figures.

The video clip has received 350,000 views on YouTube after less than a day online – watch it here:
