Canberra named Australia's best cultural fix
By admin

It might come as a surprise to some but Canberra has beaten Melbourne, Sydney and even Adelaide to be named the best place for cultural events in Australia.

The nation's capital was named Best Cultural Fix by Lonely Planet in its list of Ultimate Australian Weekend Escapes.

The guide book publisher's spokesperson Chris Zeiher says the list is based on shorter stays which focus on making the most of a destination.

Byron Bay emerged as the best family escape, while Darwin earned the title of best foodie experience.

The Kimberley in the west was named the best place to experience Australia's great outdoors.

When it comes to weekends away, it's hard to beat South Australia's wine region.

Bruny Island off the south-eastern coast of Tasmania was given the honour of being the country's most unusual island experience.
