More flights needed for World Cup, says TAM

Demand for travel to and around Brazil for the FIFA World Cup has prompted TAM Airlines to request authorisation to operate an additional 1,000 domestic and international flights during June and July.

The Brazilian-based airline’s request, made to the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), aims to meet passenger demand based on the geographic distribution of the tournament’s host cities and match dates, according to chief executive Claudia Sender.

“In addition to transporting passengers within Brazil, TAM will reinforce its operation to bring international tourists by requesting an additional of more than 200 international flights into the country during the period,” she said.

Sender revealed that the investment required to operate these flights should exceed R$50 million.

The changes, if approved, will see services to Brasilia rise from 83 to 96, to Cuiaba from 5 to 11, to Fortaleza from 27 to 32, to Manaus from 13 to 18 and to Rio de Janeiro from 100 to 112.

One third of the 32 countries which have qualified for the tournament are connected to Brazil by the LATAM Airlines Group, made up of TAM and LAN Airlines.
