5 secrets of Dublin

5 secrets of Dublin
By admin

Dublin is a city rich in drinking history and literary history – and the two go hand in hand. A writer is always better after a Guinness and a book is always better after an Irish coffee. Tourists will head for the landmark St Patrick’s Cathedral, but those after a more covert treasure should go to nearby St Patrick’s Park. On its outskirts is a wall which will introduce you to 12 of the greatest Irish writers, from Oscar Wilde to James Joyce.

James Joyce was infatuated with writing Dublin into his fiction, and some of the pubs he wrote about stand to this day. Sweny’s Bookshop featured as a pharmacy in Joyce’s Ulysses and in its latest incarnation is a second-hand bookshop that maintains the name and the legacy with daily readings of Joyce’s tales.

The Irish are a superstitious lot, and there is no greater Irish icon than a little green man. Fortunately, there’s a museum in Dublin dedicated to explaining all things leprechaun. There’s also information on the legend behind the rainbow’s pot of gold as well as the chance to enter the house of a giant. This museum is like a bedtime story, set into 12 chapters of Irish folklore.

Then there’s a secret that has secret in its name. The Secret Book and Record Store is stocked with all sorts of records and reading tomes that will vie for your attention.

For a market with stallholders in fancy dress, head to the Ferocius Mingle Marcade. Think Victorian circus meets Arabian bazaar party theme meets commerce – and you have this eccentric market. With live music, food, jewellery and a feather boa-ed monkey mannequin to boot, this is a Dublin must that is off the tourist radar.
