Best of India's old-school trains

Best of India's old-school trains
By admin

A still-functioning relic of colonial India, luxury train journeys offer a unique perspective on Indian cities and the countryside. There are two trains to get a feel for: the Royal Rajasthan and the Maharajah’s Express and they are as opulent as they sound.

For anyone who has seen the film The Darjeeling Limited, you will have high expectations of Indian rail expeditions. For those who have not seen the wacky Wes Anderson movie, the trains are a world of sweet lime drink intervals, sari and turban adorned staff and window views that deserve a frame.

Interasia has a 16-day India in Style package which includes a train trip from Jaipur to Delhi, stopping at Agra and Varanasi en route. In Jaipur, travellers will be treated to an elephant polo match. The Royal Rajasthan is a train from the same era with decadent saloons as well as a spa.

Natural Focus Safaris has an eight-day Royal Rajasthan on Wheels trip which starts in Delhi, and tracks through Jodhpur, Jaipur, Varanasi and Agra – among others.
