Cyndi Lauper flops at IPW

Cyndi Lauper flops at IPW
By admin

She may be an award winning artist but Cyndi Lauper turned in a distinctly lacklustre performance that bordered on the comic during Pow Wow – or IPW to give the event its new official title.

The whacky singer, who won a Tony for best original score for Broadway’s Kinky Boots, was drafted in as MC/brand ambassador for Tuesday’s IPW lunch which showcased the best of The Big Apple’s theatre scene.

There was some great performances from the Wicked musical, Once, Kinky Boots itself, Stomp and Chicago.

You gotta love her but it appeared as though Cyndi was recovering (not very well) from a complete bender in Vegas the previous night/morning and/or had been given the brief five minutes before taking the stage.

Armed with a folded sheet of paper which she turned to time after time (lame, apologies for that) after seemingly forgetting what she was there for, NY born-and-raised Cyndi meandered on and off stage, listlessly went through the motions and, if we’re being brutally honest, added next to nothing to proceedings. It was funny in a mildly shambolic way but we’re not sure that’s really what organisers were aiming for.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, she didn’t do a number either.

Now, Bianca Marroquin, who plays Roxy in Chicago and who did perform for IPW delegates, was, on the other hand, professionalism and enthusiasm itself when she introduced a couple of songs from the musicals.

We’ve no idea how much Cyndi was paid for her turn as NY brand ambassador but we have a hunch that whoever picked up the bill – New York tourism presumably – might be wondering whether the return on investment was quite all that.
