The Australian Federation of Travel Agents announced the appointment today, saying O'Riordan has "knowledge and skills in developing and delivering accreditation schemes is vast".

He will take up the role in mid April.

AFTA said his first task will be to devise the accreditation criteria and consult with the industry about the detail of the scheme.

"Gary has the experience, knowledge and commitment to make a difference in this important reform by way of the Accreditation scheme," AFTA chief executive Jayson Westbury said.

O'Riordan said: "I am delighted to be joining AFTA to head up the Accreditation Scheme and look forward to working with my many friends and colleagues in the travel and tourism industry on this reform."
