Singapore Airlines is tackling its surplus of pilots by making 76 who are on fixed term contracts redundant. The carrier said the surplus followed the global financial crisis in 2009/10, reduced capacity and slower than expected growth.

The pilots will leave the carrier on June 30. The move is a reversal of Singapore's previous policy of only releasing pilots when their contracts expired.

"The airline will assist them to pursue employment opportunities within the SIA Group and other airlines," it said in a statement.

Airline alliance SkyTeam has cut the price of its lowest round the world economy class fare by 10%. The offer is valid for tickets of up to 26,000 miles and must be booked between February 1 and March 31.

Silversea has released details of 10 ‘Grand Voyages' for 2013, ranging in duration of 34 to 54 days.
