Council calls for airport report

Council calls for airport report

Tourism leaders in New South Wales have called on the Government to release the findings of a report into the potential use of Wilton and Richmond RAAF for additional aviation capacity in Sydney.

The Tourism Industry Council NSW said rumours over the unsuitability of the Wilton needed clarifying.

"Given that this is election year we believe strongly that the ongoing uncertainty is not in the best interests of our state's tourism industry," general manager Andrew Jefferies said. "We therefore ask Minister Albanese to release the findings as a matter of urgency."

The Federal Government study was commissioned last July to explore the economic, environmental and social benefits around an airport at Wilton and for potential civil operations at RAAF Richmond.

Jefferies also reiterated the council's support for lifting Sydney's Airport's movement cap.

"We continue to believe that making the best use of these existing facilities at Sydney Airport provides the best outcome in the short term," he said. "The joint Federal and New South Wales Government report released in April last year clearly identified that Sydney Airport does have further capacity to grow, but was being held back by Federal legislation.

"It's about time the Federal Government made a decision in the best interests of the tourism industry and not just the current election cycle."
