The key priorities for businesses in Australia and the wider Asia Pacific region in 2013 is to ensure staff travelling for work comply with travel policies, a new global report has found.

The Carlson Wagonlit study found that travel managers are more focused than ever on savings rather than "the traveller experience".

In Asia Pacific managers "are intending to focus more on improving travel compliance and mandating booking channels".

In its Travel Management Priorities report, CWT also identified Asia Pacific and Europe as the fastest at adopting social media with 32% using Facebook and Twitter, compared to 28% in North America and only 14% in Latin America.

Meanwhile, business travel spend in Australia is expected to rise 4.6% in 2013 with air fares in Asia Pacific set to climb by 2.5% and hotels rising 3.5%.

The report also revealed that spend on meetings and events will increase 6%.

Globally, CWT said controlling costs will be pivotal.

"The challenging economic climate means there is continued pressure on buyers to both reduce costs and manage travel in a more cost-effective way," said Christophe Renard, CWT vice president marketing, communications and business intelligence. "As air and ground travel represents the majority of spend within a travel program, it is not surprising that it is the number one priority for most travel buyers, even though it is an area that is already well advanced in terms of optimisation."
