Tasmania issues tourism plea

Tourists are being urged to return to Tasmania, with the island's tourism industry insisting it is back to "business as usual" after bushfires struck some parts of the state last week.

Tourism Tasmania chief executive John Fitzgerald admitted that locations surrounding the Arthur Highway and Tasman Peninsula had encountered fire damage, but emphasised that the southern area around Port Arthur is unaffected. National parks along the east coast and in the Derwent Valley have now reopened after their closure for safety reasons.

"The iconic Port Arthur Historic Site and the popular summer getaways of Coles Bay, Bicheno, Freycinet National Park and Mt Field National Park have thankfully all escaped fire damage," Fitzgerald said.

"It is important for people with plans to visit Tasmania, or still holidaying here to know that we are open for business."
