New chief for Tourism Tasmania

New chief for Tourism Tasmania

Tourism Tasmania (TT) will start the new year with a new chief executive in place, as the tourism body confirmed the appointment of former Tourism NT boss John Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald steps into the role left vacant by the departure of Tony Mayell earlier this month, as he returned to Alice Springs to pursue “personal and career goals.”

Chairman Grant Hunt said Fitzgerald “ticked all the right boxes” and confirmed he will start work on January 7. Efforts had been made to ensure the role was filled “as soon as possible,” he added.

“We had already approved a number of major projects and initiatives for the coming year to focus Tourism Tasmania's efforts and achieve the maximum return on investment from its available resources,” he said.

Hunt acknowledged a “very challenging” environment for the industry, but was confident Fitzgerald’s appointment would help TT to “deliver our domestic and international marketing strategies, and build our industry capability”.

Meanwhile, Fitzgerald said his appointment came on the back of some “real game changers” in recent years.

“The state is really well placed to take advantage of new air services and all the work done in the last couple of years,” he said.
