Cruise claim tally just “tip of iceberg"
By admin

Claims continue to pour into the Travel Compensation Fund, following the cancellation of Classic International Cruises' Australian season earlier this month.

Chief executive Glen Wells told Travel Today that the TCF has received almost 500 claims totalling nearly $1.7 million.

“That’s just the tip of the iceberg,” he added. “It’s still very early days.”

On average, around $200,000 of claims per day are being fielded by the scheme which has had to call in extra staff to cope with the deluge.

“We normally process claims in around five to seven days but it’s blowing out now to a couple of weeks,” he said. “But we’re still turning them over.”

The TCF has already paid $500,000 of the claims, Wells reported. “But the process is a lot slower because of the sheer volume,” he admitted.

Total claims are expected to top the $5 million mark, administrator Brad Tonks of Lawler Partners told Travel Today.
