G Adventures predicts strong start for Australasian product

By admin

Around 4000 passengers are forecast to travel on G Adventures Australasian tours in the first year of operation.

The firm’s founder, Bruce Poon Tip, predicted the majority will be international travellers looking to immerse themselves in and experience indigenous cultures.

He revealed it was a challenge getting the product off the ground because of the “closed” nature of Australian tourism.

Nevertheless, he described the opportunities in Australia as “huge” and said he anticipated a similar response to its North America tours which were introduced last year.

“We surpassed passenger numbers by 50%,” Poon Tip said.

The tours will feature indigenous experiences – such as spear fishing – with “unique accommodation”.

Meanwhile, G Adventures has secured funding of US$1.3 million from the Inter-American Development Bank for a series of community projects in Costa Rica, Peru, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

It is believed to be the first time the IDB has provided a grant for a private company.
