The lowest country in the world

The lowest country in the world

Few places on earth are as beautiful or as endangered as The Maldives.

Holding the title of the lowest country in the world during a time of rising sea levels is an unenviable crown.

""

The nation's former president, Mohamed Nasheed said "If carbon emissions continue at the rate they are climbing today, my country will be underwater in seven years."

""

With the highest 'mountain' tipping the ruler at a mere 2.4 metres and 80% of the country less than 1 metre above sea level this land of 1192 coral fringed islands of perfection looks set for a tragic ending.

""

In 2008 its own government even looked at purchasing new land in India, Sri Lanka, and Australia for the resettlement of its people.

""

The captial city of Male is home to 1/3 of the population crammed onto an island just 6km2 in size.

""

Ironically though the Maldives other claim to fame is that it's the world's most dispersed country, with it's 26 atolls spread over 90,000km2 of pristine ocean.
