Perth room rates rocketed in the December quarter of 2011 as occupancy levels hovered above 85% – but regional tourism is still suffering.

The December quarter 2011 Survey of Tourist Accommodation showed the Western Australian capital averaged an 85.6% occupancy for the quarter as room rates grew 15.5% to $197.64.
But regional occupancy averaged only 55% in 2011, the Tourism Council WA said.
Meanwhile, Australia's capital cities averaged 81.4% for the quarter, steady with the previous year as room supply rose 1.8%.
Room rates climbed 3.6% to $179.20 as revenue per available room grew 3.6% to $145.85.
Sydney had the highest occupancy for the quarter with 86.3%, with room rates up 4.5% to $201.54.
