Why you need to travel before your kids become teens

While it still presents its challenges, Kaleidoscopic Travel has uncovered the reasons why travellers should consider taking their children overseas before they hit their teenage years.

But yes, that means packing more bags, which we believe is the greatest challenge of travelling.

But perhaps with kids, it won’t be the toughest part though.

Marie Sulda, travel expert and owner of Kaleidoscopic Travel believes there are multiple reasons as to why you should take your children travelling before they hit their teens.

“It’s a well-known fact that seeing the monuments of Rome is as difficult with a teen, who would rather be with their friends or connected to Wi-Fi,  as it is with a Toddler, who may be throwing themselves in a fit of rage into the Trevi Fountain,” she said.

“So when is the best time to do that big trip with your kids?”

Sulda identifies taking your children overseas when they are around eight to 11-years-old, is the ideal time.

Before hitting the teenage years, parents can still pay child airfare which is roughly 75 per cent of the normal fare, offering a decent amount of savings.

Children under 11 are still applicable for child rates, while those aged 13 and above switch into adult rates.

And beyond savings, at such an impressionable age, children are open to the world, ready for new experiences and ready to soak up cultural knowledge from the world.

At this slightly older age, they can comfortably sit at a restaurant without making a nuisance and will remember the experience for the rest of their lives.

So what are the best trips to tackle with children in this age bracket?

The USA trip

Travelling to the USA is one of the most popular trips for this age bracket.

Both Qantas and Virgin will fly from Australia via Los Angeles to New York, giving you two stops on your ticket.

In New York you can visit Times Square, Central Park, the New York Zoo, Coney Island and even see a basketball or baseball match.

In Los Angeles, Universal Studios, Hollywood, Disneyland, The Pier in Santa Monica, and Anaheim are perfect for children.

From your base in Los Angeles, you can then decide if you want to add on a trip to San Francisco, San Diego or Las Vegas.

The Europe trip

Going on a big Europe trip is great with eight to 11-year-olds due to the array of options.

Leasing a car is an economical and easy way to see all the sights, easily stopping for picnics and toilet breaks.

Rail is also great for children of this age, as they can generally keep themselves occupied with games and snacks, or simply soak in the mesmerising sights as they go by.

If water is more your thing, you will reap the benefits of unpacking once whilst cruising the Mediterranean, Scandinavia or the rivers of Europe.

Cruises are a great way to easily budget for a holiday where all transport and meals are included in the price.

The Asia trip

As the egotistical teenage years loom, it is invaluable for children to experience countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Sri Lanka or India, to offer some perspective on how other people on the planet live.

As one of the cheapest overseas destinations, Asia is both affordable and accommodating for families.

With children a little older, they can try new foods, take a cooking class, cook with a local family or parents can even organise a homestay.

The ski trip

No matter where you go to visit the snow, a ski trip is perfect for the active family.

Ski lessons will occupy kids for part of the day, while parents enjoy the slopes and have a moment to themselves.

Activities range from skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and ice skating, so everyone will sleep well.

For extra value for money, Club Med have some all-inclusive ski resorts throughout the world, that make budgeting easy and include meals, lift passes, evening entertainment, non-ski activities, premium open bars and kids clubs.

The Australia trip

The driving holiday around Australia is great on so many levels, with the ease of taking your own car, packing your own things and then choosing from an array of accommodation options from tents through to hotels and resorts.

You can take things at your own pace as you head up or down the East Coast, across to Western Australia, down to Tasmania or up to the Northern Territory.

This holiday is all about getting to know your kids, each other and Australia, with everyone occupied by the constant change in scenery.
