The best places to watch the skies this Meteor Watch Day
This Saturday (That’s tomorrow!) is Meteor Watch Day! So if you’re one to gaze up at the sky in wonder, tomorrow is your day! Or night? Whatever, it’s Friday and we’re tired.
Anyway, the Travel Corporation is celebrating this oddly specific yet very cool occasion by listing off the best places in Australia to soak up some beautiful views of the night sky.
Here are six amazing locations that are perfect for star gazing.
Alice Springs
As the sun sets in Alice, enjoy a drink and watch the sunset while a delicious three-course meal cooks in a bush oven.
Sit down to dine under the magical Milky Way with Inspiring Journey’s Outback Australia: The Colour of Red while your host shares his knowledge of traditional Indigenous bush food and stories of the land.
You can literally see 2, 500, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000 stars in the night sky in Australia. Wonder how long that would take to count? Better get started!
Great Ocean Road to the Barossa
Take a break from city life and pollution on an escape with AAT Kings Great Ocean Road and Kangaroo Island trip that will take you on an epic road trip from Melbourne along the Great Ocean road to Warrnambool, Kangaroo Island and the Barossa Valley to Adelaide – sounds amazing right?
The 12 Apostles rock formations are thought to be between 15 and 20 million years old which will really put in to perspective your place in the universe as you stare up into the stars.
Kings Creek Station
After a day sampling bush tucker (including insect eating and plant sampling) your authentic Aussie experience will continue with a night sleeping under the stars with Contiki’s Outback Adventure.
You’ll snuggle up in your own swag at an outback camel and cattle station, which coincidently is the largest exporter of wild camels in Australia and is known for its Kings Creek camel burgers.
You have to try one before you go – very healthy stuff!
Perth to Margaret River
Whether you’re staring up at the stars in Margaret River (the population sits at just 8,000 so there’s minimal light pollution) or getting up close to them in the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk in Albany, there’s plenty of sparkle to see on AAT King’s South Western Escape.
This trip is full to the brim with awesome experiences from the 138 renowned wineries in Margaret River to the pink lake in Esperance. Amazing!
Uluru
Meet the magical stars of the Southern Hemisphere with the sensational Sounds of Silence dinner on Inspiring Journey’s Inspiring Australia. Settle in on a viewing platform overlooking the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park with canapes and drinks while the sun sets. Listen to the sounds of a didgeridoo then enjoy an unforgettable dining experience where the resident star talker will decode the night sky. As well as the regular Southern Cross, signs of the zodiac, Milky way there are also planets and galaxies visible due to the exceptional clarity of the atmosphere.
The Whitsundays
The ultimate place to lay back and spot a meteor? On the deck of your sailing boat in the Whitsundays of course! Head off on Contiki’s Islands and Rainforest with Sailing experience and enjoy uninterrupted views of the cosmos.
As part of one of Australia’s largest National Park’s, The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is completely unspoiled by light pollution – don’t forget to look up!
