Travel Weekly caught up with The Walshe Group’s CEO Jacqui Walshe to chat about their sponsorship of Women in Travel.

What does the Women in Travel event mean to you?

It is an opportunity to recognise high performing women at all levels and across different areas of the travel sector. We have some really talented women working in our industry and not all of them have the opportunity to receive public acknowledgement of their achievement.  The Women in Travel event creates that possibility.

Why did The Walshe Group sponsor the event?

The Walshe Group has a very strong contingent of outstanding women across the business, particularly in our leadership positions, and we want to publicly support the contribution women make to our industry.

We chose the entrepreneurship category because this is where women have a clear position of strength.  Australia ranks second in the world as the best place for female entrepreneurship (2015 Women Global Entrepreneur Leaders Report) and the travel industry contains many women entrepreneurs who deserve recognition.

This is the inaugural Women in Travel Awards in Australia. Why do you think this is an important event the travel industry should embrace?

The travel industry has always employed a high percentage of women.  We should commend the industry for this and celebrate talented women that have not previously been publicly recognised.

What are you looking forward to most about the event?

A chance to celebrate the achievement of a range of fabulous women.

What’s the most important thing to focus on when it comes to women’s role in the travel industry?

Women are key contributors and need to be recognised and given fair opportunity to lead and progress.  There should be at least equal representation of women in all executive leadership teams and boards in the travel industry.

Entries are now open across a range of 18 categories. Entrants can self-nominate to go into the running in one (or more) categories, all entries are free and close on 6 October.

However, if you know any inspirational Women in Travel, acknowledge their excellence by nominating them to enter the awards. Simply email nominations@womenintravel.com.au with their name(s), email address and what category they should enter.

Awards will be presented at a gala cocktail function on 17 November in Sydney – reserve your seat now with Earlybird rates on offer.
