TripAdvisor takes green program down under

To celebrate Earth Day yesterday, TripAdivsor has made the announcement to go green down under.

In both Australia and New Zealand, TripAdvisor GreenLeaders will be brought to life, to help travellers around the world plan and book greener trips when they visit our pretty side of the earth.

Developed in consultation with the United Nations Environment Program, Ecotourism Australia and EarthCheck, the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program highlights hotels and B&Bs engaging in environmentally-friendly practices.

Over 8000 properties in 67 countries, including 170 in Australia and New Zealand, have been awarded the TripAdvisor GreenLeader status, making it the largest green hotels program in the world.

Properties participating in the program range from small, independent establishments through to multinational brands, with travellers able to identify them by a badge on the property listing page.

Practices helping turn hotels into green hotspots include linen and towel re-use, recycling and composting to solar panels, electric car charging stations and green roofing.

Properties are tiered between Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum awards, and the more green practices a property has, the higher the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders level it can achieve.

After their stay, travellers are able to include their comments on the property’s environmental practices as part of their review, with already the comments number hitting just shy of 100,000.

According to a TripBarometer survey, 71% of global travellers place importance on properties implementing eco-friendly practices, and 77% of global hoteliers indicate they currently have green practices in place.

“More and more travellers around the world are placing importance on properties that implement eco-friendly practices,” manager of responsible travel at TripAdvisor GreenLeaders Ryan Dillon said.

“With TripAdvisor GreenLeaders, we are pleased to help TripAdvisor’s 315 million travellers a month who use TripAdvisor by highlighting accommodations engaging in environmentally friendly practices.”

And the hotels on board with the project are more than happy to turn towards the green light.

“From the launch of our PLANET 21 program which offers our clients sustainable products and services, Accor is dedicated to continually introducing environmentally friendly practices efficiencies and TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme helps us to highlight our achievements to eco-travellers around the globe,” Accor’s VP for sustainable development Arnaud Herrmann said.

“Eco tourism is all inclusive. It’s for everyone now and plays an essential role in the future of hospitality.”
