Tonga to reopen its border next month

Tonga will reopen its border to international arrivals from 1 August as the country’s State of Emergency remains at the ‘orange’ level, the second highest level under the Tonga COVID framework.

Weekly flights to and from Australia will resume also on August 4, and are now available for booking through Qantas, who were running charter flights for Tonga citizens and workers throughout the pandemic.

Travellers will need a vaccine certificate and will have to show a supervised COVID-19 (RAT) taken within 24 hours of departure.

They will also need travel insurance if they are not a citizen or resident.

Travellers also need a COVID-19 (PCR) test within 3-5 days of arrival.

Those who test positive must self-isolate for 5 days at their own cost.

Tonga will re-open its border on the same day that Samoa opens its border as well.

Vaccination rates have been critical to the timing of both countries re-opening their borders.

Tonga currently has 91.9 per cent of its population fully vaccinated, while Samoa has more than 99 per cent of its population fully vaccinated.

Tonga has also still been rattled by the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano in January this year which caused a tsunami.

This flooded parts of Tongatapu and other nearby islands.
