The Big Fat Airline Wrap
It’s a glorious day to go flying, so get strapped in for today’s wrap.
Aviation is one of those industries we all get super nerdy about, and that’s exactly why you clicked on this article.
So to keep your weird fascination with the industry that’s up in the air, we present to you, our wrap.
Free upgrade to first, please
You might have heard the fantastic news – you can score a complementary upgrade to first class on British Airways.
The one-way upgrade is available to customers who purchase Club World business class tickets by 26 October 2015.
The special fares start from just $4,017 from Sydney to Singapore, or $8,994 return from Sydney to London, with travel valid between 1 November 2015 and 29 February 2016. For more information please visit ba.com.
We liked it so much we gave it three photos instead of the standard one!
Etihad’s early arrival
Etihad Airways has announced that its award-winning Airbus A380 service, which features the only commercially available three-room suite in the sky – The Residence by Etihad – will begin flying between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and New York’s John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport on November 23, 2015.
The new arrival date and additional capacity for A380 service comes in response to strong demand from Etihad Airways guests who are traveling during the U.S.’s busy Thanksgiving holiday, as well as to attend the 2015 Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix taking place between November 27 and 29. The new service was originally scheduled to begin on December 1, 2015 and will replace one of the existing Boeing 777 services.
From the moment they begin their journey, guests in The Residence enjoy the ultimate in luxury: a chauffeur-driven transfer to the airport; up to two guests on board will experience a private three-room suite that includes a living room, a double bedroom, and a separate ensuite shower room.
Guests also have access to the Etihad Lifestyle Concierge team, which works closely with the airline’s inflight, Savoy-trained butler to deliver highly personalised service both on the ground and in the air, including dining reservations, entertainment bookings, special events, destination information and lifestyle services.
Qantas signs Solomon codeshare
Qantas has today signed a new codeshare agreement with Solomon Airlines which will deliver significant benefits for the growing numbers of customers travelling between Australia and Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands.
From 15 November 2015, Qantas customers will be able travel on Solomon Airlines services from Brisbane and Sydney to Honiara, operated by their Airbus A320 aircraft.
Qantas Executive Manager International Sales, Stephen Thompson, said the new codeshare was great news for Qantas customers travelling to the Solomon Islands.
“This means more opportunities to earn frequent flyer points and status credits, and for the first time, we’ll be offering lounge access in Honiara for eligible customers.”
Air Astana promotes Astana Expo
An Air Astana Embraer 190 has become one of the first of 30 aircraft in the fleet to feature the distinctive Astana Expo 2017 logo on both sides of the fuselage. Cooperative international marketing activity for this major Eco-Friendly Energy event follows the announcement that Air Astana would be “Official Carrier of Astana Expo 2017” at a ceremony in Astana on 17th August 2015.
“Astana Expo 2017 will strongly focus on the eco-friendly energy, with exhibitors in the fields of demand, innovation and practical solutions expected to take a high profile at the event,” said Peter Foster, President & CEO of Air Astana.
“For Air Astana, reduction of aircraft emissions is one of our highest priorities, which is reflected in our recent decision to acquire a fleet of Airbus A320 family NEO aircraft, whose new engine technology cuts emissions by 15%.”
Swiss ups passenger numbers

The number of flights rose by 0.3% to 110,027 (2014: 109,740). Of those, 96,188 were operated within the European network (no change on last year) and 13,839 within the intercontinental network (+2.0% on 2014).

B787 check checked off to-do list
Etihad Airways Engineering, the Middle East’s leading aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) provider, successfully completed the region’s first heavy maintenance C-check on a Boeing 787 aircraft for LATAM, one of the world’s largest airline groups with a global network of more than 140 destinations.
LATAM was the launch customer for the B787 Dreamliner in the Americas and selected Etihad Airways Engineering to carry out the first scheduled C-check on its B787 aircraft.
Jeff Wilkinson, Senior Vice President Technical, Etihad Airways, said: “We value the trust that the LATAM Airlines Group has placed in us by selecting Etihad Airways Engineering to perform the C-check on its first B787 aircraft.
“This was also the first C-check carried out in the Middle East region, and provides a strong endorsement of the inherent quality and skill sets of the team involved, and of our dedicated MRO facilities. We remain fully committed to strengthening our relationship with LATAM by meeting and exceeding their expectations.”
