Smartraveller has released an update warning that the US Government received information that terrorists may be planning an attack on large gatherings of people at an unspecified location in the greater Sandton area of Johannesburg.

South African Tourism released a statement acknowledging the travel alert. The attack is predicted to take place on Saturday, 29 October 2022.

However, there has been no further information provided on the timing, method or target of the potential attack.

The South African security cluster and other relevant government entities have reviewed the safety alert, in consultation with the United States government, and will not take any threat intelligence, either actionable or not, for granted.

However, South African officials aim to reassure the public that there is no cause for alarm, at this stage.

The security cluster will continue to ensure that the country is safe for citizens and tourists alike.
