Terrorist attack in Tunisia kills 27 people

A gunman has shot dead at least 27 people, including foreign tourists, in an attack on a beach resort in Tunisia, the interior ministry says.

According to reports from The Guardian, the attack took place on the Imperial Marhaba hotel, with the interior ministry saying most of those killed were tourists.

Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui has told national television the shooting on Friday in Sousse was a “terrorist attack”.

A security source at the scene said the body of one gunman armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle lay where police had shot him dead, as per reports from The Guardian. It was unclear whether there were other assailants.

Sousse, some 150 kilometres from Tunis, is a popular resort for both Tunisians and Europeans.

According to The Guardian, a number of people were on the beach when the attack occurred, including Susan Ricketts and her sister.

“Everybody just started running in and screaming. The whole place just cleared,” she said.

There are no reports that any of the victims are Australian.

The attack is the latest in Tunisia, a North African nation that has attracted visitors for its culture and Mediterranean Sea beaches, apparently targeting tourists.

In March, at least 23 people died when gunmen stormed the landmark Bardo Museum in Tunis.
