Smokes on a plane: Passenger on Israeli flight starts bathroom fire

An Israeli passenger on an El Al flight from Tel Aviv to Bangkok caused havoc recently when he started a fire in the bathroom of the plane.

The passenger was having a cheeky cigarette in the bathroom, causing the smoke alarm to go off.

But when he tried to extinguish the cigarette in the bathroom trash can, the butt ignited some toilet paper.

The Israeli airline said that cabin crew and staff attended to the fire immediately, putting it out using extinguishers.

“The flight continued as scheduled and landed safely at Bangkok Airport,” the airline said.

El Al added that the passenger would face legal action upon his return to Israel.

Although, as no damage was caused to the aircraft, El Al has decided not to involve the police in the matter.

Inflight smoking is banned on almost all carriers around the world and Australia was one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking on domestic services.

Traveller reported that in 1973, 123 people died on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris after a passenger started a fire in the bathroom trash can with a cigarette butt.
