ChatGPT is getting pretty good at everything right now – but how good is it at knowing the characteristics of Australia’s biggest cities?

We put it to the test, asking it to share stereotypes for people from across the country.

Here’s how it went:

Sydney:

Sydney, the largest city in Australia, is often stereotyped as being fashionable, ambitious, and materialistic. Sydneysiders are said to be obsessed with their appearance and are sometimes seen as unfriendly or cold.

This stereotype is likely influenced by the city’s reputation as a global fashion and business hub. While there may be some truth to the stereotype, it is important to remember that not all people from Sydney fit this mold.

Melbourne:

Melbourne, often seen as Sydney’s rival city, is stereotyped as being cultured, artistic, and intellectual.

Melburnians are said to be coffee snobs and foodies, with a love for all things trendy and hipster.

This stereotype is likely influenced by Melbourne’s reputation as a cultural and culinary capital of Australia. However, not all people from Melbourne are into the latest food and fashion trends, and it’s important to avoid making assumptions based on stereotypes.

Brisbane:

Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is stereotyped as being laid-back, friendly, and outdoorsy.

Brisbane residents are often seen as relaxed and easy-going, with a love for nature and adventure.

This stereotype is likely influenced by Brisbane’s sunny climate, beautiful beaches, and proximity to outdoor activities like hiking and surfing.

However, not all people from Brisbane are into outdoor activities, and some may be more reserved or introverted.

Perth:

Perth, the capital of Western Australia, is stereotyped as being relaxed, friendly, and sporty.

Perth residents are said to be passionate about sports and outdoor activities, with a love for the beach and the ocean.

This stereotype is likely influenced by Perth’s location on the west coast and its reputation as a surfer’s paradise.

However, not all people from Perth are into sports or the beach, and some may prefer indoor activities like reading or watching movies.

Adelaide:

Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is stereotyped as being refined, cultured, and friendly.

Adelaidians are said to have a love for the arts, with a sophisticated and intellectual mindset.

This stereotype is likely influenced by Adelaide’s reputation as a center for the arts and culture, with many museums, galleries, and festivals.

However, not all people from Adelaide are interested in the arts or consider themselves refined, and it’s important to avoid making assumptions based on stereotypes.
