Pie Attack! Qantas CEO Alan Joyce gets pie in the face

pie in the face

It’s been a sticky morning for Qantas CEO Alan Joyce after a cream pie was hurled at his face during a breakfast speaking appointment in Perth.

The AAP and various news outlets including the SBS revealed the CEO was “attacked by a man who rubbed a cream pie in his face” early this morning as Joyce as addressing the West Business Leadership Matters audience about the airline’s move to offer direct flights from Perth to London.

According to PerthNow, the CEO was on stage for his keynote for about three minutes before a man appeared from behind him holding the pie.

“The man, who appeared to be in his late 60s or early 70s, grabbed Mr Joyce and forcefully pushed the pie into the chief executive’s face before walking calmly off the stage towards an exit door,” the paper reports.

The newswire reports “it is unclear why the elderly man wearing a suit attacked him and he was quickly grabbed by security”.

PerthNow reports the crowd of about 500 were unsure if the incident was part of the presentation.

As expected, live tweets ensued.
