Norwegian Cruise Line cancels early 2024 Norwegian Joy itineraries

Norwegian Cruise Line cancels early 2024 Norwegian Joy itineraries

Would be cruisers set to sail in early 2024 have been informed by Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) that their trip has been cancelled.

All sailing onboard Norwegian Joy has been cancelled from 6 January to 10 February 2024 with guests told by email: “As part of our commitment to continuously offer extraordinary vacation experiences around the world for our guests, and to uphold a consistent world-class product across our fleet, Norwegian Joy will be undergoing a revitalisation in early 2024.”

Guests will receive full refunds to the form of payment made to secure the reservation, those who used a future cruise credit (FCC) will have said credit returned, however will not have the expiration date extended.

In addition to the refund, NCL is also providing a 10 percent FCC on the fare paid for the cancelled voyage which can be used on any future NCL until the end of 2024 and concluded its email, “we sincerely appreciate your understanding and look forward to welcoming you aboard very soon.”

A total of four sailings are impacted by this cancellation, including two one-way 15-night voyages between Miami and Los Angeles. The other two cancelled cruises are a 5-night Mexican Riviera getaway from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, and a 7-night sailing from Miami to Honduras, Belize, and Mexico.

No further details about the revitalisation (the first since a $50 million USD upgrade in 2019) have been released, but the drydock work will likely include standard hotel upgrades and refinishing of public areas, as well as various technical or behind-the-scenes upgrades.

There is also the possibility that there will be changes to lounges and entertainment areas as a result of recent staff and entertainment cuts by NCL.

Cruise ship dry docks are generally scheduled well in advance, and cruise lines try to plan for gaps in a ship’s deployment so no cruises need to be cancelled when a ship is out of service for upgrades and maintenance. In some cases, like this one, shipyard schedules, the supply of materials, environmental regulation changes, and unexpected repairs can all require adjustments to dry dock plans.

NCL similarly cancelled cruises for Norwegian Escape in 2022 due to dry lock, Carnival Cruise Lines Carnival Paradise also cancelled five sailings in October 2022, representative of ongoing supply chain issues as a result of the COVID pandemic.
