Midweek Interview with Lincoln Harris, Founder, India Unbound

Lincoln from India Unbound takes some time out of creating custom made journeys to India and Sri Lanka to talk dream holidays, amazing cuisine and the allure of hot air balloons.

The challenge for the industry is… Staying relevant and offering value.

The things I like about my job… Exploring off-beat locations in India and Sri Lanka; helpng create people’s dream holidays and getting to know the hosts at some of the smaller, boutique properties we use.

And the frustrations are… That there are only 3 meals in a day and so many amazing cuisines to try throughout India and Sri Lanka

If I didn’t work in travel I would be… A hot air balloon pilot

Favourite airline? Singapore Airlines.

My proudest moment was… Winning the Government of India’s National Tourism Award in 2008-2009. Shame I smashed the glass trophy less than 12 hours after receiving it. (I still have the shards.)

I try to relax by… Playing Aussie Rules.

The last time I feared for my life was… Playing Aussie Rules.

If I can, I always try to avoid… Cold bain maries.

I really wish I had… More time in the day

The best advice I’ve ever received was… Grow your business organically

I don’t understand why people… Suddenly get frustrated about disembarking when the plane reaches the gate.

My greatest weakness is… Dal Makhani (black dal with cream) & butter naan – both are too good to pass up, but oh so rich!!

And my greatest strength is… Resisting the dal makhani

If I won a $1 million lottery (aside from travelling), I would… Buy a sports oval in Mumbai so that the Aussie Rules teams that India Unbound supports in that city have a dedicated, beautiful green space to train and play on.

If I could be someone else for one day I would be… President Obama’s bag man

I’ve always wanted to travel to… Nanda Devi – India’s second-highest mountain.

My favourite holiday was… Andaman Islands, India.  Such beautiful, peaceful beaches.
