Melbourne braces for CBD chaos

The countdown is on for chaos in Melbourne this afternoon.

More than 5800 have declared on social media they will help bring Melbourne city to a standstill this afternoon with the third Stop the Forced Closures protest, with a further 15,000 invited.

The rally planned for 3pm on the steps of Flinders Street Station is against the closure of remote Aboriginal communities, and is expected to block trams along Flinders St and St Kilda Rd, the Herald reports.

“At this stage, trams will operate normally,” a service letter on the Yarra Trams website stated per the report.

“However, if the rally occupies road space, Victoria Police may close roads to traffic.

“If any roads are closed, we will update tramTRACKER and make announcements to trams and stops.”

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle told the Herald Sun these protests must not become the norm.

“Shutting down the city for two hours … is not the way to win sympathy or support for a cause,” Doyle told the paper.

“This smacks of a protest for the protesters, by the protesters, and not about the views of the wider community.”
