Melbourne bookings up 52% as Formula 1-fever drives racing fans wild

    New data from Webjet has revealed a recent spike in bookings to Melbourne for the Grand Prix weekend, in line with the sixth season of Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ docuseries coming out.

    Jumping by 52 per cent compared to the start of the month, bookings revved up in the same week season 6 landed on screens.

    Continuing its moment in the domestic travel spotlight, Melbourne is also gearing up for an influx of Easter visitors, having been crowned the top domestic travel destination over the Easter period for the second year running. Nearly 1 in 5 (18.8%) of all domestic passengers travelling between March 28 and April 25 are set to touch down in the city.

    Webjet reported a 52 per cent increase in bookings for flights to Melbourne made between February 23 2024 – March 1 2024 for travel between 21 March 2024 – 25 March 2024, compared to bookings for flights to Melbourne for travel between 21 March 2024 – 25 March 2024, with bookings made between 2 February – 9 February.

    Top 10 domestic destinations booked during the period Jan 1st – Feb 29th 2024 for travel between March 28 to April 25 2024:

    1. Melbourne – 18.8 per cent
    2. Sydney – 13.9 per cent
    3. Brisbane – 12.3 per cent
    4. Adelaide – 8.9 per cent
    5. Gold Coast – 8.3 per cent
    6. Cairns – 7.4 per cent
    7. Perth – 5.6 per cent
    8. Hobart – 4.6 per cent
    9. Maroochydore – 3.2 per cent
    10. Canberra – 2 per cent
