Four tourists dead in hit-and-run incident in Tajikistan

Four tourists have died and another three have been injured in a hit-and-run incident in the Central Asian nation of Tajikistan.

The incident, which saw the tourists killed and injured by a car that fled the scene while they were on a bike tour, took place on Sunday in the district of Danghara, 150 kilometres south of the Tajikistan’s capital Dushanbe.

The interior ministry told AFP the seven cyclists included two Americans, two Dutch nationals, and three other unspecified foreigners.

They made no specification on the nationalities of those who died, however as per news.com, the US embassy in Tajikistan said two of the fatalities were US citizens.

The interior ministry said: “Three foreigners were killed at the scene and another died in hospital.”

They added that three other tourists had received medical treatment.

In an operation launched to find those involved in the deadly accident, Tajikistan authorities announced that there had been one arrest, and two other suspects killed as a result of resisting arrest.

“One person has been arrested, two others resisted arrest and have been killed,” the interior ministry added.

There are no further details provided about the suspects, but there are reports that it was an intentional act.
