Brazil makes play for Australian tourists ahead of Olympics

Brazil is seeking to strengthen its presence in the Australian market with the launch of a provisional tourist visa waiver and a new campaign specifically targeting the local market ahead of the Rio Olympic Games.

The Consulate-General confirmed a provisional tourist visa waiver has been introduced for Australian citizens visiting Brazil between June 1 and September 18 2016 either for the Olympic and Paralympic Games or as a tourist for up to 90 days.

Meanwhile, the new campaign which kicks off with an event in Sydney on April 6, aims to grow the number of Australian visitors and encourage them to stay longer in Brazil in order to venture to tourist destinations beyond Rio de Janeiro where the games will be held. A collaboration between the Consulate-General and the Brazilian Tourist Board (EMBRATUR),  it will attempt to strengthen links with both media and the trade.

“This is a huge year for Brazil in Australia, having hosted two successful events in Sydney last September,” Ambassador Carlos de Abreu, Consul-General in Sydney, said.

“We are keen to share all the information needed for those who are planning their trip to Brazil and also to help agents sell not just the obvious cities and regions, but also the stunning, lesser-known destinations.”

To date, more than 53,000 tickets have already been purchased in Australia to attend the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
