“Big Bogan” to be erected in NSW

In a bid to boost tourism to western NSW’s Bogan Shire, the council is planning to capitalise on its name by building a “Big Bogan” statue.

If this was announced a week earlier, most would think it was an April Fool’s hoax, but sadly (or not) there are plans to construct a 3.5-meter statue in western NSW’s Bogan Shire.

The council said it would capitalise on its often-derogatory Australian slang term, with the $8000 statue to feature a “bloke” wearing shorts, a singlet and holding a fishing rod and tuckerbox, the ABC reports.

“We intend to put it by the Bogan River at this stage, we haven’t got a definite site selected,” Mayor Ray Donald

“Bogan has a bit of a negative connotation at times, but we want to get the positive side of it and get any benefit we can out of it for local tourism.”

Work on the statue will not commence until local community members give approval.

“We need to consult the community and see how they feel about it.”

According to an ABC report, local residents have expressed mixed feelings and that the idea could be taken further for improvement.

“One thing that’s missing is the stubby,” one resident told the paper.

If given the green light, the statue could be erected by the end of the year.

The rural shire has a population of 3,000, based around the town of Nyngan.
