Azamara picks Oz for world tour

Azamara Club Cruises will launch an inaugural round the world sailing from Australia in 2018.

Signalling confidence in its second largest source market, the luxury small ship line will sail for 102 days from Sydney to London, journeying up the Thames river to Tower Bridge for its final port of call.

“We decided to do it from here because your community, the guests and your clients are very unique for a reason. They are serious travellers,” Azamara president and CEO Larry Pimentel said.

The boutique cruise line will sail its maiden voyage to Australia this December.

“This year 6500 Australians have travelled with Azamara which represents 17% of the business,” Pimentel said.

“Australia will be at a ruthless passenger head count level, the number two market for the brand worldwide, slightly eclipsing our good friends on a per capita basis in the UK,” Royal Caribbean International regional vice president Asia Pacific Gavin Smith said.

Azamara points of difference include a longer time in port, more overnights and late nights.

“This two-ship brand has shown that there is indeed a market for overnights,” Pimentel said.

Azamara Club Cruises has more overnight stays as a percentage of deployments than other cruise lines.

“We created a completely different product where the ship was a conveyance,” Pimentel said. “We have to think outside the ship. People want to see sights, tastes and sounds.”

“What are the locals enjoying? Let’s deliver that.”

The fleet of Azamara Quest and Azamara Journey will be fully renovated by April 2016.
