Air Canada brings the industry together for ‘Come From Away’

The Aussie travel industry came together on Tuesday night at Theatre Royal Sydney for the highly acclaimed musical ‘Come From Away,’ which tells the story of a small Canadian town during the 9/11 attacks.

Air Canada, which sponsored the musical in collaboration with Destination Canada, hosted approximately 50 industry partners to enjoy the musical. Prior to the show, attendees enjoyed drinks and canapés at the RCB Lounge and got the chance to meet and mingle with the cast following the illustrious production.

‘Come From Away’ mixes romance, comedy, tragedy and the incredibly unique real life situation that locals and travellers experienced during the days following the September 11 attacks in Gander, a small town in Newfoundland, Canada. After the attacks, the US Government closed American airspace, leaving those up in the air blocked off from their US destination.

38 planes carrying 6,579 people diverted to the town, where it’s population just about doubled and the locals had to figure out how they would accommodate such a huge amount of people. Following the tales of couples, lone travellers and foreigners, the musical playfully and creatively tells the tale of how these people came together through such a difficult and perplexing time.

The musical features approximately a dozen cast members who all play a litany of roles on the revolving stage that constantly reinvents itself throughout the show.

The show is only in Sydney until 29 January, but will move to Newcastle in February, Adelaide in March, Perth in May and then Canberra in June.
