Sydney Airport unveils 20-year plan

Sydney Airport unveils 20-year plan
By admin

Sydney Airport has unveiled its 20-year draft Master Plan with ground transport key to the facility being able to handle the annual growth in passenger numbers.

The airport has predicted that 74.3 million passengers will fly in and out of Sydney by 2033 with improved road access a critical component of the 20-year plan.

It said there would be no change to the curfew or aircraft movement cap and no new runways as it played down any need for a second airport.

Among the transport proposals include a new one-way ring road for the Terminal 2 and 3 precinct, the creation of a “free-flowing” road through Terminal 1 and a city-bound exit.

Improved bus facilities also form part of the plan while the airport “will continue to advocate for new and more affordable bus and train services”.

Previously-announced plans to merge the international and domestic terminals are included in the Master Plan.

“Numerous government studies have shown that while we have runway and apron capacity for several decades to come, it is ground access to the airport that is impacting on customers,” Sydney Airport chief executive Kerrie Mather said. “We are proposing five and 20-year ground transport solutions in this master plan to improve access to the airport and encourage more people to use public transport.”

She said the integration of the domestic and international terminals has received widespread support and will provide an improved passenger experience.

“Many passengers will be able to transfer [between international and domestic services] under one roof,” Mather said. “Sydney Airport is Australia’s gateway airport. This concept plan provides the flexibility to meet the evolving needs of the aviation market.”

Submissions on the plan can be made until August 30 after which it will be submitted to the federal government for approval.
