Seat review: Business Class, Emirates A380, Melbourne to Auckland
Seat 9/10
The flight is only three hours and 20 minutes, but I’d quite happily settle down in this seat for a great deal longer. Offering an impressive amount of privacy, the comfortable soft leather seat reclines to fully flat with plenty of storage to stash away any clutter. Technology is plentiful, with a tablet, a wireless controller and an electronic window shutter control with adjustable tinted windows. The only thing that seems to be missing is a massage function.
Service 8/10
The flight does leave two hours late, due to its delayed arrival from Dubai, but staff are apologetic and keep us updated on the revised arrival time to Auckland. The cabin crew makes a point of coming by and having a quick chat as the aircraft readies to leave. Drinks are offered, hot towels are delivered and that friendly and attentive service continues for the duration of the flight.

As it’s a short morning flight, there are none of the long-haul Emirates frills such as amenities bags, bed socks or mattresses. But the mini bar tucked away beside my seat is stocked with a range of soft and alcoholic drinks, with an eye mask and a set of noise-cancelling headphones. Add a magazine or two, a blanket and a pillow and I’m good to go.
Food 8/10
It’s a little difficult to judge an airline’s inflight dining by its breakfast menu particularly if, like myself, you’re not a hug fan of eggs. But there are several options to choose from and my choice of a fresh fruit plate was prettily presented and accompanied by a selection of warm breads and pastries. Importantly, the coffee comes fast and is swiftly refilled, with champagne also on offer for those passengers game for a dose of morning bubbles.
Entertainment 9/10
Pretty much every movie I’ve been hankering to see in recent months is available here – the choice is almost overwhelming with enough films, TV shows, music and games to keep anyone entertained for a while. On top of that is the quirky B-movie selection, which wins points for tongue-in-cheek awfulness with films such as Sharknado and Mega Piranha.

The full potential of both the aircraft is perhaps better tested on a longer journey, but for the short journey across the Tasman, this product certainly offers an extremely comfortable way to travel. The morning flight is timed particularly well for travellers keen to arrive fresh and ready for a productive afternoon.
